Equitable Digital Access

  1. are only two laptops in my classroom. One is used with the SmartBoard, while the other is a personal teacher computer. Students are very seldom allowed to use either laptop. Considering technology, I am very fortuate. There are three ways all students in my class access the internet. We are a BYOD and most students have their own devise. If a student does not have a devise, I am able to check a kindle or ipad out of the library for them. These devices are good when students need to review for an assessment or do research on the internet. Our school also has two fully functioning computer labs. This works great for required testing when all students are completing the same assessment. The students are also allowed to use computers in the library as well for research or to complete a classroom assignment. The last way students use the internet in my classroom is through the use of kindles. My math intervention class students use a individualized math program. The students may use their own device; however, I have a small class set that most students use. Having computer labs, kindles, and a BYOD policy has provided equity in my classroom along with endless possibilities.

There are several different ways to ensure equitable digital access. With only one or a couple of available devices, you may set up a student schedule. Each student would have the same amount of time on the device to complete an assignment. Group projects is another way to involve students with technology. Groups could be assigned to devices. Lessons presented on a device could also be divided into parts. Students would then be given the opportunity to work with the device as the lesson is presented. Without every student having access at the same time, record keeping is needed to ensure every student has an opportunity to work with technology.
